Feng Shui BaGua Map Basics for Your Home in 4 Easy Steps!

The Feng Shui Bagua map (also called Ba-Gua or Pakua) is one of the main tools utilized in Feng Shui to analyze the energy of any given space. For this particular post, I am focusing on the BTB [Black Sect Tantric Buddhist School ] Western Bagua map.

Translated from Chinese, Bagua literally means, "8 areas.” You could perceive the Bagua Map as an "energy map" or "life station map" which corresponds to major categories that shape and cultivate our life experiences. The Bagua Map also teaches you how to become more connected to the consciousness of your space. Once the Bagua Map is superimposed over an entire floor plan, single room, or yard it resembles a 9 boxed gridded map (kind of like a tic-tac-toe board). Each section on the Bagua Map corresponds to specific groupings of colors, an element, and a shape that associate with unique energy meridians within your home.

What are the Bagua Map life sections?

  • Family and Health

Honoring your family, extended and ancestors, and building a healthy connections.

Living a well-balanced lifestyle (mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual).

  • Wealth & Abundance

Human connections, connections to the environment, financial, material, etc.

  • Fame & Reputation

Reputation in the world. Character building of self. How you are known and see yourself. (trust, love, loyalty, etc)

  • Marriage & Relationships

Divine connection with yourself. Harmonious connection with other (personal and business).

  • Creativity & Children

Honoring childlike energy; playfulness and curiosity. Honoring your own inner child and doing activities and/or surrounding yourself with what brings joy to your heart.

  • Helpful People & Travel

Helping others, asking for help. Could even call upon spirit guides, source energy, etc for support. To be adventurous and spontaneous.

  • Career & Life Journey

Acknowledging your profession/career and being open and connected to a purpose that motivates you in life.

  • Spirituality, Knowledge & Wisdom

Nourishing your spirit, gaining wisdom through experience, and sharing what you learn.

Side Note: The life section of "Health" could also be placed in the center of the Bagua Map grid, thus providing 9 areas to label.

Learn How To Place the Bagua Map over your Home In Four Easy Steps

Step 1. Print out or hand draw your home's entire floor plan. If you have a multiple level home, to begin just focus on the first level.

  • Remember to include all rooms; bathrooms, bedrooms, closets, etc. Indicating where windows, hallways, patio doors, stairs and the garage is located, is all necessary. The example above is of a one bedroom apartment.

  • Side Note: Its suggested to have a floor plan that is in the shape of a square or rectangle. Why? These shapes relate to 'wholeness' and offer a strong supportive foundation to build upon energetically.

Step 2. Locate your actual front door entrance and face into your home (as indicated with the red arrow in the diagram above). The actual front door is known as the "mouth of chi," and directs you on how to begin placing the Bagua map grid over your entire floor plan of the house.

Step 3. To the best of your ability, divide the entire floor plan into 9 even sections (like with a tic-tac-toe board). I illustrated this concept in the above diagram. You'll notice there are nine boxes indicated. This is because the life section of "Health" will be placed in the center box of the grid (creating 9 sections), which is also called 'the heart of the home' or ' tai chi.'

Step 4. Place your Bagua map side-by-side with your floor plan as a visual reference to help you see how the life sections transfer onto the Bagua Map grid superimposed over the home's floor plan.

  • Side Note: Below is an enlargement of the Bagua Map and how it looks superimposed over a one bedroom apartment floor plan.
