What Is The Best Location to Place My Fish Tank According To Feng Shui?

Laura Cerrano

Including a fish tank within your home, and especially your office, is by far one of the most common Feng Shui recommendations you’ll hear about, no matter which method of Feng Shui you use. Why? According to the Feng Shui principles, fish tanks (with actual fish) activate and enhance your overall wealth and career energy. From a scientific perspective, fish tanks provide actual health benefits too!

Scientific Studies About The Benefits of Fish Tanks:

Reducing Stress, Blood pressure and Anxiety

According to a study reported through BBC news, Dr. Matthew White from the University of Exeter's European Centre for Environment and Human Health (ECEHH), shared people who viewed an empty fish tank reported feeling more relaxed and the benefits increased even more when his team introduced fish over the course of about a four-week period. During their studies, participants’ biofeedback also noted a decrease in blood pressure and anxiety.

Calm the Effects of Alzheimer’s Disease

Another study from Purdue University found that by displaying fish tanks paired with brightly colored fish reduced disruptive behaviors and improved eating habits of those with Alzheimer’s disease. Patients exhibited more relaxing behavior and exhibited less physical aggressiveness, wandering, pacing, and yelling. The studies also found patients had greater appetites, eating up to 21% more food than they did before, with an average increase of 17% across all patients studied.

And there are many more noted benefits, such as with helping to offer better social emotional interactions, productivity, and positive therapeutic effects for all ages.

Where to Place the fish tank?

  • According to Form School Feng Shui, keeping moving water near the front door of your home is recommended. Another location to place water based on Form School is to the left of the home. This is where the ‘‘green dragon” resides, and that particular celestial animal resonates well with the water element.

  • If using the Western Bagua, southeast (wealth) is the best location to place the fish tank. Next would be north (career) and east (family).

  • As for Flying Stars, universally its noted placing a fish tank within the east and southwest areas of the home from 2004 to 2023 is good, due to 8 period.

  • According to dowsers, goldfish hate being on geostress lines (which is induced by man made trauma done to the earth’s natural magnetic grid lines). In short, if you notice your goldfish acting out of the ordinary, dying off for not good reason (even if the water is clear, clean and healthy), it could be you’ve unknowingly placed the tank directly over a geostress line (GS). The best thing to do, is to move the tank from the GS line or cure the GS line with crystals, rods or whatever tool of choice you personally resonate to.

With all this noted, for each person and each home or office, the location of the actual fish tank will vary.

Where NOT To Place the Fishtank:

In general, it’s recommended NOT to place a fish tank inside a bedroom and kitchen. You’ll also want to avoid the center of the home, which relates to health. Looking to the Flying Stars method, it’s said to avoid placing a fish tank within the northeast sector during the period of 2004 to 2023 as it could promote poor health, monetary loss, and setbacks in career.

Does the Number of Fish matter?

There are various responses to this question.

  • Some Feng Shui consultants say a good number is 1, 4, 6, 8, and 9.

  • Others say, having 8 goldfish and one goldfish should be black to absorb negative energy.

  • You could also refer to your Kua number (your primary elemental number).

  • Numbers also take on Yinyang characteristics. Having a yang number of fish (3) is said to be better than having a yin number of fish (8).

Does the Shape of the fish tank matter?

Some Feng Shui Consultants say the shape of the fish tank does not so much, while others say it’s still a good detail to pay attention to. Typically, rectangle (wood element), irregular shaped (water element) and round shaped (metal element) aquariums are ideal. Triangles (fire element) and squares (earth element) are recommended shapes to avoid.

Fish Tank care:

If you choose to include a fish tank within your home or office, be forewarned this is not something to take lightly. Below are a few considerations to keep in mind for your fish tank.

  • Be sure you purchase the appropriate size aquarium for the type of fish you adopt. The smaller the tank, the less maintenance. And certain types of fish may require higher levels of maintenance than others.

  • Be mindful not to place your fish tank in a highly exposed sun filled region of your home or office as this could overheat the tank and harm your fish.

  • Keep the water clean! This is common sense but not every owner is so keen on this base foundation. Obviously, clean water is beneficial for your fish, while also representing obtaining clear thoughts vs being in a murky mental state.
