Are Arched Doorways In Feng Shui - Good or Bad?

Branching off from a previous post called, “Understanding The Anatomy of Doors in Feng Shui,” let’s take a closer look at archway door designs through the lens of Feng Shui. Arched doorways make for beautiful architecture and can provide a lovely sense of character to the home. In general, they could also help provide a smoother flow of energetic movement from room to room. However, there are a few Feng Shui principles to keep in mind.

If you have a curved archway door design, based on Feng Shui, this is said to influence the element of metal. Other shapes to keep in mind that relate to metal element include domes, cylinders, ovals and circles.

With this all noted, if you happen to have or are in the process of designing a front door with a curved archway, its recommended this type of front door face toward the West (metal), Northwest (metal), and North (water) directions. The reason for this is, these three main directions accommodate metal and water elements, which provides a creative “constructive” cycle when referring to the five elements theory. In short, this is good!

In general, archways (Paifang) are usually found at the borders of Chinatowns, but not always. When seen, these type of archways mark a boundary line between the host society and the Chinese community, thus separating the two social and cultural spaces. However, the inscriptions on the archways link the host society with the Chinese community through peaceful means and intentions. The translation of the inscriptions are said to commonly reference the phrase of, “Friendship Arches” or “Goodwill Arches.”

Archways were also used to honor deceased loved ones in China. These particular designs were commonly referred to as, “memorial archways.” Due to this, some may perceive having arched doors and passageways leading into and throughout your home as a negative.

Having the opportunities to provide Feng Shui consultations for various homes with arched doorways and passageways, I’ve personally found the energy of those homes to be very pleasing and successful. Yet, naturally, there is still a need for balance with yin yang design concepts. This could be accommodated through the adoption of geometric shapes inside and around the home to help provide better structure, support, and the grounding of energy for that given environment.
